Game Log

Rune Age

Jaeger talked Kiesa and Yanthor into playing Rune Age, playing the "Return of the Dragonlords" scenario. Jaeger spent too much of the mid-game building his economy (and pillaging his deck) and not enough time building actual combat strength. This didn't actually help him; Kiesa won the game by defeating the boss to win the game, immediately before Yanthor could have defeated the boss.

Saturday, 7 September

Cities and Knights of Catan

After transcribing the complete list of games available, Jaeger chose Cities and Knights of Catan (since it was his birthday, and he opted against inflicting Empire Builder on everyone). He laid out an layout with poor resource spreads. By the time the barbarians came the first time, only Yanthor managed to defend his city; the other three players lost their cities. From there the game ran slowly; Yanthor eventually managed to get the cloth citadel and won by getting a second Defender of Catan, after Kiesa declined to throw her resources at Jaeger's sad attempt at forestalling the inevitable.

Small World

Jaeger, Kiesa, Yanthor, and Anya played Small World. The races ebbed and flowed and the final score was:

  • Anya: 85
  • Kiesa: 80
  • Jaeger: 78
  • Yanthor: 77

Rune Age

While Jaeger was making supper, Anya, Kiesa, and Zan Lynx played Rune Age with the scenario "Resurgence of the Dragonlords". Kiesa played the Dwarves of Dunwarr and won the game at length, after supper was complete.

Rune Age (II)

After supper, Anya, Jaeger, Yanthor, and Zan Lynx played Rune Age with the scenario "Ascent of the Overlord". Yanthor drew randomly to play the overlord, playing the elves. Zan Lynx played the orcs, managed to deal early damage to Yanthor, and was eliminated first. Anya, playing Waiqar the Undying, took damage next and was about to die when Jaeger, playing the Dwarves of Dunwarr, managed to get two digging machines at once and dealt 12 damage to Yanthor to win the game for the allied players.

Rune Age (III)

Zan Lynx departed, and Anya, Jaeger, and Yanthor played the "Cataclysm" scenario of Rune Age, with each player reprising their races from the previous game. By the time the final boss rolled around, each player was able to defeat it with the cards in his or her hand -- which was entirely unnecessary, since only one player needed to defeat the boss. As an extra exercise, Jaeger tuned his deck's order by hand to deal 24 damage using one War Machine, one Guardian, one Digging Machine, and two Forge Masters (which would have drawn a three-gold card each to fuel the Digging Machine). Yanthor thought that the mercenaries made the scenario easier; Anya made extensive use of the Chaos Beast as the backbone of her army.

Pandemic

While a babysitter came by for Calvin, Anya, Jaeger, Kiesa, and Yanthor played the Pandemic expansion On the Brink. The players randomized their roles and played the "virulent strain" variation. Anya played the Epidemiologist but did not use her role ability to great effect. Three turns from the end the players realized that they had only three turns left and tried to formulate a way to win by eradicating the remaining two infections (yellow and blue) but could not foresee a way with the turns available. Jaeger ended his turn in Paris, drew the Paris card (as he had hoped he might), but on the intensification step the players suffered from four or five chain outbreaks (they stopped counting once it was obvious they had lost the game).

Pandemic (II)

Yanthor talked the group into playing another game in which the players chose their own roles. Jaeger chose the Archivist role and used the role while wandering around Europe and North America to pick up blue cards to ultimately cure that infection a turn before Kiesa cured the black infection to win the game in record time, with a third of the player deck remaining. This time the players chose not to eradicate any diseases but focused on tamping down infections before they outbroke.

Dominion

After Calvin went to preschool, Jaeger studied the rules for Dominion. Anya, Jaeger, Kiesa, and Yanthor played the starter game with the recommended ten cards. The game started slowly but Yanthor eventually built up to playing five or ten actions per turn but not actually building very much. He eventually bought enough cards to end the game and won with 15 points. Anya and Kiesa tied for second with ten points. Jaeger came in last with four points, having trashed his estates without purchasing many other victory points to replace them.

Dominion (II)

The players reprised their seats and roles for another game with the same action cards. This time only Kiesa bought the Militia but used it rarely. Jaeger card-counted victory points during the game but missed one of Kiesa's Duchies. Kiesa bought the cellar to end the game, tying with Yanthor for 27 points, but she had had one more turn so Yanthor won. Jaeger came in third with 24 points and Anya came in fourth with twelve points.

Rune Age

Jaeger suggested that the Megafestors should play the Rune Age scenario "Ascent of the Overlord" with Kiesa as the overlord. She agreed and won a dice roll to play the dwarves. Jaeger picked his second-choice race and played the orcs. Jaeger managed to deal ten damage relatively early, then Kiesa hung on for a while, defending most of the attacks against her, until Jaeger finally managed to deal eight damage on a good hand to win the game for the allied players.

Rune Age (II)

After supper, the Megafestors contemplated their options and eventually reprised the afternoon game of Rune Age. Kiesa replayed the overlord but switched her faction to the elves. Kiesa managed to eliminate Yanthor in a crushing blow, then attacked Jaeger, who held on long enough to play the Giant Troll against her, but took a deadly three damage thanks to the "Eye for an Eye" event card, killing him off. (After the fact, the allied players couldn't remember whether that instant card had come into play that round or if it had gone out of play, which might have flipped the balance of power in the game.) Kiesa immediately focused on Anya but only managed to deal her one damage on the next turn. Anya counter-attacked but Kiesa destroyed her War Machine. The back-and-forth damage continued until Anya managed to deal the overlord three damage by discarding two gold coins totaling four, winning the game for the allied players.

Rune Age (III)

Jaeger convinced the other Megafestors to play the "Resurgence of the Dragonlords" scenario of Rune Age. Yanthor, playing Uthuk Y'llan, launched diversionary attacks on the neutral cities that Anya (playing Waiqar the Undying) and Jaeger (playing the Orcs of the Broken Plains) controlled, but Jaeger managed to counter-attack and retake a three-influence city. Jaeger managed to keep his deck relatively slim but Anya defeated the boss dragonlord to win the game. (Kiesa played the elves.)

Tuesday, 10 September

Rune Age (solo)

After the Lincoln Contingent departed, Jaeger played the Rune Age scenario "Cataclysm" solo, playing the Orcs of the Broken Plains. He won the scenario handily, dealing a crushing blow to "Mind Riders" in the final event phase and winning the game with only 7 damage on his home realm. On his last turn he simulated a combat in which he wielded 35 combat power. He attributed his success to ruthlessly tuning his deck to eliminate marginally-useful cards; he acquired Pillage in the first round and used it consistently. (It also didn't hurt that he was able to acquire both independent cities without interference from other players.)
