Game Log

Friday, 17 February

Gloom

Yanthor talked Jaeger, Kiesa, and Linknoid into playing Gloom. Yanthor played first, having had the worst day. We ran out of cards near the end of the game and the rules were silent on what to do. We ended up playing such that there were no more cards to be drawn, but the game did not end immediately. Jaeger played Castle Slogar and managed to kill off all of his characters first to win with -95 points.

Saturday, 18 February

Agricola

Yanthor, Kiesa, Jaeger, Linknoid, and an unidentified female participant played the five-player family-game variant of Agricola. Yanthor went for an early husbandry strategy (taking advantage of the five-player ability to acquire all three animals from the beginning of the game) and managed to come in second place, with 31 points. Linknoid focused on husbandry as well but managed a more balanced build and won with 33 points. Jaeger had a bit of trouble figuring out how to play the five-player variant properly, having had entirely too much experience with the two-player variant.

Jaeger keeps forgetting that he can immediately take the bake-bread action when building a bread-baking major improvement.

Modern Art

Rick brought Modern Art and played it with Yanthor, Jaeger, Linknoid, and an unnamed female participant. Yanthor won with $521,000 in art sales.

Red November

Rick brought Red November and played it with Yanthor, Jaeger, Anya, Humblik, and Ashia. Rick triggered the Kraken timed event at time zero, and Yanthor triggered the reactor warming that killed the crew, ending the game with a loss, shortly after midnight. It wasn't clear what the optimal strategy was, or whether it's really possible to win.

Sunday, 19 February

Modern Art

While sitting around the table after supper trying to figure out what to do, Jaeger talked Linknoid, Rick, and Shelly into playing Modern Art. This game seemed to feature more groupthink than the previous exercise; the same three artists persisted in the top three places for the first three seasons. The game itself seems to encourage this sort of groupthink. Linknoid won with $632,000 in art sales, more than $100,000 more than the other three players. Linknoid's secret strategy was to never buy his own art (for more than half of what he expected to receive for it).

7 Wonders (first iteration)

Yanthor talked Humblik, Linknoid, Ric, Shelly, and Jaeger into playing 7 Wonders. This was the first time Linknoid, Humblik, and Jaeger played the game. We ate baked hot chocolate as Yanthor was scoring the game and determined that Linknoid won.

7 Wonders (second iteration)

Linknoid and Humblik traded places for a second iteration with the same characters. Yanthor and Jaeger tied for first with 56 points each. Jaeger went for a balanced strategy with just enough military to fend Yanthor off, and Yanthor went for a no-resource, pro-science strategy.

7 Wonders (third iteration)

Jaeger was unable to talk Kiesa into joining the group for a third iteration of 7 Wonders. The existing group stayed in place for a rematch. Most of the players ended up with exactly the same civilizations on the random draw, so they redrew to get different civilizations. Jaeger pulled ahead for a narrow fairly diversified victory with 58 points, with Ric in second with 57 points and Shelly in third with 56 points.

Gloom

Around midnight, the remaining Festors went to sleep, and Jaeger, Yanthor, and Linknoid played Gloom. Jaeger played Castle Slogar again and managed to kill off only two of his characters (due to discarding his entire hand more than once and discarding the untimely deaths that he held) when Yanthor killed off all of Hemlock Hall for -140 total pathos points to win the game.

Monday, 20 February

Settlers of Catan

Early in the afternoon, Anya, Jaeger, Kiesa, Linknoid, and Yanthor sat down to play Settlers of Catan. This being a game on the five-and-six-player board, Jaeger's strategy was to go for the sheep port and the pastures, but failed to acquire an adequate number spread, and ended up without any 6es for the duration of the game. As Yanthor pulled ahead in the second half of the game, Linknoid traded to get a bunch of road-building resources and grabbed The Longest Road, which he held for the rest of the game. Anya emerged from nowhere with nine points just as she had to leave for her game to go to a music lesson. Humblik took over, but Kiesa managed to win with a last-minute settlement. "Some day," Kiesa said, "I will win at Agricola. Until then, I will have to settle for winning at Catan."

7 Wonders

Jaeger, Kiesa, Humblik, Linknoid, and Yanthor played 7 Wonders. This was Kiesa's first game. Linknoid won with 53 points, mostly off his gold cards.

Lost Cities

In the evening, after the visiting-from-Lincoln Megafestors departed, and Calvin went to bed, Jaeger and Kiesa played a quick single round of Lost Cities while trying to figure out what else to do for the evening. Neither had any experience with the game, but it seemed like a good way to kill a few minutes while Yanthor watched. Jaeger won.

Cities and Knights of Catan

Jaeger, Kiesa, and Yanthor stared at the stack of games on the table before deciding to play Cities and Knights of Catan. Jaeger was worried about his number spread (having been burned by that in the classic Catan game earlier in the day) but manged to rake in vast quantities of resources but was eclipsed by Yanthor, who won with the Longest Road and the Merchant Cone.

Lost Cities (part two)

Kiesa went to bed, and Jaeger and Yanthor played another game of Lost Cities. Yanthor, being more experienced at the game, won the first two rounds handily. Jaeger won the third round, but his score for the three-round game was still less than Yanthor's score for the first two rounds. Yanthor won.

Project

Humblik: Stock analysis

I've managed to pull together some data. I gathered data from a custom screener that I created at finviz.com and from my local library's online subscription to ValueLine. I linked the two data sources together using the stock ticker symbol.

The part I'm not quite sure on is exactly what values to filter the results with. These are my first shots at it. There are a lot of fields available so if there is a field you think might be of better value for analysis, just let me know.

The following two files are tab delimited with column headers on the first row:
